A recent letter to the editor stated: the repeal of Obamacare will “only” affect 4 percent of the American people. I will remind the writer that 46 million people were without health insurance before Obamacare, and at least 46 million people will be without health insurance if it is repealed. For me, if only 1,000 people are without health insurance, that is 1,000 too many.
The United States is the wealthiest country in the world, and it is also the only major country on Earth that doesn’t provide some form of universal health care to all its citizens. That is appalling, despicable and totally disgraceful, but Republicans aren’t ashamed. As long as they have their own health insurance, they could not care less about the unfortunate.
This country claims it is the leader of the free world, but the only country it leads is itself. Other countries don’t follow us and are laughing and thumbing their noses at us since Donald Trump was elected president.
The letter stated Americans will not abandon the poor, the indigent or the infirm. Of course not, but without universal health care or health insurance, those individuals must rely on emergency-room treatment. But emergency rooms do not provide preventive health care, or annual checkups, and necessary tests to detect and prevent more serious illnesses.
