Trading or killing of monitor lizards is prohibited in India

CHENNAI: Forest officials of the Cuddalore forest division in Tamil Nadu has arrested one person for trading in monitor lizards, prohibited under the Protected Species Act.

Officials have recovered 13 live monitor lizards, packed in a gunny bag from the arrested. Y Mehboob (62) was arrested on the highway near Panruti on the midnight of Wednesday, when he was travelling to Hosur.

Monitor lizard meat is in demand in hotels and restaurants along the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border and fetches Rs 2500 per kilo.

Giving details to TOI, district forest officer A Soundararajan said Mehboob was involved in the monitor lizard trade for more than 15 years. He used to source the live animals from people of the Narikoravas community living in Aranthangi, Dharapuram and Palani.

The movement of Mehboob was followed by field operatives of TRAFFIC – India, a wildlife crime detection organisation. Mehboob is wanted in several similar cases, Soundararajan said. A case under section IX of Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 has been filed against the offender. Further investigation is on.
